How Modern Advances are Changing Diabetes Technology

New technologies are changing the future of diabetes management in a huge way, giving people back many of the freedoms they thought were long gone.

With almost 10% of the U.S. population at risk or already suffering from some form of diabetes, medical technology developers everywhere are hard at work finding ways to reduce the profound impact on individual sufferers as well as the national health care system as a whole.

Here are some of the bold, innovative ways in which diabetes management is changing in the 21st century. For starters:

Secret blood sugar checks can stick it

New glucose monitoring technology means you can say ‘sayonara’ to those messy assembly-required blood sugar tests that usually had to be done tucked in a corner or in a bathroom stall. The new generation of minimally-invasive glucose monitors are made to interface with a number of portable meters (such as our very own Pops Rebel, which has the option to attach directly to your phone) to give users accurate readings in real-time and on-the-go.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIH)

“…good management of glucose greatly helps people with diabetes stay healthy and prevent complications of the disease. People who gain the largest benefit from a [glucose meter] are those who use it every day or nearly every day.”

By allowing wearers a closeup look into their unique metabolisms and daily habits they’ll be able to better understand how certain foods and activities affect them as they progress through their day. This data also empowers them to take more control in maintaining their overall health and keeping their wellbeing in check. And did we mention that they can be used literally anywhere and everywhere? All we can say is bye-bye bathrooms, and hello world!

Virtual assistants will keep your health in check

Diabetes is not only unpleasant but managing it can be more time-consuming than a full-time job. The heavy mental and emotional burden of dealing with the condition and its symptoms on a day-to-day basis even has a name: diabetes burnout. According to the American Diabetes Association, the constant tracking of blood sugar levels, insulin doses, meal planning, and exercise can leave people feeling drained and more than just a little overwhelmed.

Luckily, the future looks bright in the age of virtual assistants whose sole purpose is to keep our minds and bodies running like clockwork. While glucose meters are made to record and store important vitals data, the assistants’ job is to interpret the results and coach you through the changing reality of your day.

From carb-counting to meds-dispensing, a virtual assistant can significantly lighten your load and free up more time for the stuff that makes life worthwhile. Not only that, but virtual diabetes management coaches can also alert designated contacts when you’re in distress, providing critical life-support when you need it most.

Gamification with benefits

If life is a game, then use your diabetes technology to win it. With more employers and health care providers partnering with diabetes management software than ever before, the benefits of leading a healthy and controlled lifestyle are expected to grow exponentially in the near future.

From insurance credits and discounts to points that you can cash in for real-life goods and services, users will be actively incentivized to “level up” their health stats in more ways than one. So you can have your cake and eat it too (quite literally!).

And that’s not the end of it: with new discoveries and developments happening every day, the future of diabetes management looks brighter than ever.
